the occasion of World Day of Free Software, an NGO the city of Yaounde organized demonstrations
global day of free software has been celebrated in hundreds of countries last Saturday, September 19. In Yaounde, it is the non-governmental organization (NGO), Technology Promotion Commitment to the Environment and Quality of Life (PROTEGE QV) who hosted the celebration at the British Council. This NGO that works to support to microfinance, the promotion of ICTs for development, environmental protection and promoting leadership in fact part of a tradition of celebrating the day World of Free Software in Cameroon that it began in 2005. According to Sylvie Siyam, promoter of the NGO, this day is organized for exchanging , we inform, share, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the free software to see if free software is an opportunity to gain access to opportunities .
This celebration was centered around two major activities: A conference on the theme: Free software, which stakes for Africa and Cameroon in particular? and a workshop on installing and using free software Edubuntu.
At the conference, Exhibitors have built the public on free software and its benefits. Exhibitors and lifted the clear difference between the need to be established between the free and freedom of free software. The freedom to use the software without any limits, to study its operation, to give or sell it, modify and redistribute are the elements that underpin the freedom of free software. Regarding the advantages of free software, exhibitors cited among other things, the systematic reduction of piracy, the security operation, freedom and sustainability of this type of software, its profitability, its efficiency and reliability, its economic character, his ability to create jobs and wealth. The reflection was then carried around the strategies for raising awareness and extension of free software. The most significant proposal in the presentation was made by the advocacy exhibitors for the introduction of the use of OSS in primary schools, secondary schools and universities.
The conference completed by the presentation of Edubuntu, a free software applied to education. Pupils and students in the room of the British Council were able to discover opportunities for learning in certain subjects like math with this software as open source software users should release dependence on proprietary software from Microsoft U.S. example. Following the workshops, fifty participants were selected to participate in the workshop on installing and using the software Edubuntu. This day
Software Free hosted by Ong PROTEGE QV has been hosting a special community team UBUNTU CAMEROON recognized internationally. This team has greatly raised awareness among participants on the use and benefits of the Ubuntu operating system. Some participants also won various prizes through a raffle planned by the organizing committee. Appointment is made for the World Day of Free Software September 19, 2009.
